NAQS APAPA COMMAND STRENGTHENS COLLABORATION AND CAPACITY BUILDING

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) Apapa Command, led by Controller G.A. Orumah, has intensified efforts to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and enhance operational efficiency at the nation’s premier port.

As part of this initiative, the Command paid a courtesy visit to the Customs Area Controller, Apapa Command, Babajide Jaiyeoba Osoba. The visit reinforced the longstanding partnership between NAQS and the Nigeria Customs Service, particularly in the areas of agricultural trade facilitation, border security, and regulatory enforcement. Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to improved cooperation, with a strategic committee established to develop practical measures for seamless quarantine operations at the port.

In furtherance of stakeholder engagement, the Command also hosted freight forwarders, licensed agents, and importers operating within the Apapa Port corridor. The session provided an opportunity to sensitize stakeholders on the NAQS mandate, user fees, inspection protocols, certification requirements, and clearance procedures for products of quarantine interest.

Discussions focused on streamlining processes, reducing cargo clearance timelines, and strengthening compliance with regulatory standards. CQ Orumah emphasized the importance of collaboration with licensed agents in maintaining the integrity of agricultural trade and urged strict adherence to established guidelines to facilitate smooth and compliant transactions.

The engagement was interactive and productive, with stakeholders offering constructive feedback and practical recommendations to enhance service delivery. The Command has indicated readiness to implement viable suggestions that will further improve trade facilitation and regulatory compliance.

Complementing these efforts, the Command is currently conducting a capacity-building workshop for its officers. The training covers practical applications of relevant ISPMs, solid wood packaging compliance, and regulatory enforcement procedures. CQ Orumah underscored the importance of continuous professional development in equipping officers to effectively discharge NAQS’ mandate and meet evolving operational demands.
