NAQS, China in Final Talks on Aquatic Export Protocol

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) is edging closer to opening up new trade opportunities for the country’s exporters with the People’s Republic of China.

On Monday, 18th August 2025, the Comptroller General of NAQS, Dr. Vincent Isegbe, held a high-level meeting in Abuja with officials of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Macaulay Williams and Adebanke Aderogba, alongside representatives of the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership, Judy Melifonwu and Adedeji Adegun.

The meeting focused on fine-tuning the protocol on inspection, quarantine, and sanitary requirements for the export of wild aquatic products from Nigeria to China. The protocol, once signed, is expected to serve as the official framework that guarantees the safety, quality, and international acceptability of Nigerian aquatic products in the Chinese market.

By meeting the sanitary and phytosanitary standards of the Chinese market, Nigeria will be able to showcase its vast aquatic resources on a global scale, contributing to economic diversification and increased foreign exchange earnings.

The initiative reflects the Federal Government’s drive to expand Nigeria’s presence in international markets and to position agriculture as a pillar of sustainable economic growth. With the signing of this protocol, Nigerian exporters will be better placed to tap into China’s huge demand for aquatic products while assuring consumers of their safety and quality.
