The initiative, delivered by GIZ and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) under the “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems” (TAFS) programme, marks a significant step toward improving national food export standards.
The three-day workshops, held in Lagos and Kano, trained 35 NAQS officers and included participation from key stakeholders such as the Nigeria Agribusiness Group, FACAN, AFAN, and Dawanau International Grains Market. Topics covered included international SPS frameworks, rapid aflatoxin testing, pest surveillance, export certification, and harmonization of sanitary and phytosanitary measures across ECOWAS and the AfCFTA.
As part of the programme, NAQS received PPE for 40 officers and two immunoassay aflatoxin test kits to support safe and efficient inspections. Dr. Joy Echue, the South-West Zonal Coordinator, received the items on behalf of the agency and conveyed the Comptroller General’s appreciation to GIZ for their continued support.
This initiative has equipped NAQS officers with critical tools and technical knowledge, positioning Nigeria to meet international export requirements while promoting intra-African trade. It underscores the importance of continued investment in training and infrastructure to ensure food safety, build national capacity, and unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s agricultural exports.
