NIGERIAN Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) in collaboration with De-On Nigeria Limited, recently empowered not less than women and youth from Ajeromi/Ifedlodun federal constituency in Lagos State with capacity building on the rudiments of poultry production.
The training workshop held bewteen November 17 and 19, 2021, at Bola Ahmed Tinubu Hall, Layeni Area Council, Ojo Road, Amukoko, Lagos, was facilitated and sponsored by the member of the House of Representatives representing the constituency, Honourable Kolawole Musibau.
According to the consultant and training coordinator, Professor Adeboye, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune stated that the main objective of the empowerment programme is the creation of wealth as well as job opportunity and reduction of poverty among youth and women of Ajeromi/Ifelodun federal constituency.
Omole, further informed that the training and empowerment programme is part of the national mandate of the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) as a regulatory agency under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for the harmonisation of Plants, Veterinary and Aquatic resources (fisheries) Quarantine in Nigeria.
“In order to promote and regulate sanitary (animal and fisheries health) and phytosanitary (plant health) measures in connection with the import and export of agricultural products with a view to minimising the risk to agricultural economy, food safety and the environment there is need for enlightenment and training on production, housing, disease and biosecurity measures, processing, value addition and best techniques in poultry farming for improved productivities, income generation, employment opportunity and foreign exchange earnings for people Ajeromi/Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State.”
Empowerment materials such as chickens, feeds, water and feeding troughs and cash were given to poultry farming participants, while fishery participants received juvenile fish, feeds and cash.
